What is a Permanent?

A Permanent is a brevet, but it can be ridden on any day, chosen by the rider. Regarding distances, time limits, controls, brevet cards, certificates, they are similar to regular BRM brevets. Also digital information like GPS files, Google Map links, overview maps, are available in exactly the same way as usual. Permanents are typically designed by enthusiastic randonneurs, but the administration and control of Permanents is overseen by Korea Randonneurs. A permanent can be done individually but also in a group. If you are a first time participant in a randonneuring event, please make sure you fully understand the rules of regular brevets

How to apply for a Permanent

Send an email to Jan Boonstra at janboonstra49@gmail.com with the following information:
  • The Permanent code (PT-01 ~ PT- ), see the listing above.
  • The member number and name of the rider or team leader.
  • In case of a group: the member numbers and names of the other riders.
You do not need to fix the date and starting time in advance. The expiry date (after two months) is printed on the brevet card. Please check first your address in the database for correctness. The rider or team leader will receive an email confirming the application and instructions for paying the fee. After payment, the brevet cards and waiver forms are sent by postal mail, but also sent in digital format. Only if the brevet cards have not arrived in time at your address, print out the image files and use it. The waiver form(s) must be signed by each rider before the start. A photograph of the waiver form(s) must be sent to Jan Boonstra before the start also. All Other data, like the GPS file and the overview map, can be downloaded from the information page of the specific Permanent.

Riding a Permanent

At the designated location of the start, the rider takes a picture of himself or of his team and the bicycle(s), with clearly visible features that prove the correct location. That picture has to be sent immediately to Jan Boonstra, addresses are provided on the brevet card. Do not forget to mention your member number(s) and the PT-number. The time of sending the picture counts as the starting time. The same is required for the finish. But in case not all team members arrive at the same time, for each arrival a picture is required. The time of sending the message counts as the arrival time.

Controls

Controls are in most cases convenience stores, where the rider requests a stamp on his/her control card. If no stamp is available, please bring a receipt with the date, time and location printed on it (one receipt for each rider). If the control is not a convenience store or other place where a stamp can be obtained, a "photo control" is required. The rider takes a 'selfie' or the team leader takes a picture of himself and his team members at a fixed location and sends this picture immediately from the spot to Jan Boonstra. Use Kakao Talk for this by preference, but SMS or Facebook messenger are also allowed. Features, shown in this picture, must be recognizable and corresponding with features shown on the specific image of the control point on the Permanent's control information page.

What to do after riding a Permanent

Fill in the date, times (start and finish) and sign the card. The control cards signed by the rider, eventually including receipts, plus the original waiver form(s), should be sent by postal mail to Jan Boonstra (address provided on the brevet card). Send it by normal mail, not registered mail. Certificates will be sent to the rider or the team leader. The form and layout of the certificate is identical to the certificate issued after a regular brevet. The result of each rider is updated in the database, which can be checked online by the member.

Rules for Permanents

All rules regarding safety and night riding apply, as well as the obligation for proper accident insurance. Participants must be KoRa members. If needed, riders may register at the Online Registration Site. KoRa permanents differ from regular BRM brevets as follows:
  • Permanents are not ACP sanctioned, meaning that a successful permanent does not count toward the Super Randonneur qualification. But they do count for KR5000 and R12 awards
  • Distances outside the BRM-scheme (200, 300, 400, 600, 1000 km) are possible and the listed kilometers will count for one's personal mileage record.
  • The time limit is calculated from an average speed of 15 km/h, using the actual distance and counting from the actual starting time. Example: Starting time is 7:10 am and the distance is 204 km. The riding time is calculated as 13h 36m, so the rider needs to send his arrival photograph before 8:46 pm.
  • Apply only by email to janboonstra49@gmail.com
  • A cue sheet is not provided.
  • The bicycle inspection at the start is not carried out by a KoRa staff, it is the responsibility of the rider to ensure the safety of his/her bike in accordance with the rules.
  • The fee is fixed at 15,000 won per permanent for one person. But in case of a group, the fee for the team leader is 10,000 won, provided that this person does the application, the payment for all team members and receives the brevet cards and the certificates (these new fees for a group ride are effective from 2017/01/01).
  • Print the overview map and control information yourself, links for downloading are given on the brevet info page.
  • A certificate is only made and sent after the brevet card was returned for homologation
All other brevet rules apply, including the regulations mentioned in the FAQ page.

NOTE:
Saying thanks to all active members who want to send in a proposal or have sent in a proposal for a new permanent, we are sorry to say that there are many proposals waiting to be processed at this moment. Due to other duties (upcoming brevets, fleche), new permanents cannot be effected in the next coming months (March, April 2017).
